When shopping for windows there are some terms you need to know so that you can compare performance and quality among the various brands. We'll list the basic terms for you here:
U-Factor - U-Factor measures overall energy efficiency. It tells you the rate at which Heat flows through the entire window or door frame. The lower the U-factor, the more energy-efficient the window or door.

R-Value - R-Value measures the transfer of temperature through an object. The higher the number the more energy efficient the window, door or object is.

Solar Heat Gain - SHGC measures how well the window blocks heat from the sun. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat the window lets in.
A few other things you need to consider when looking at windows are related to the construction of the frame. How thick is the vinyl making up the frame. The frame on a vinyl window must be welded for strength so check to see if the corners are welded together when looking at samples. Vinyl windows also need to have multiple hollow chambers between the frames for optimal thermal performance.
In Iowa the ideal window should have a U-Value of .30 or less according to Energy Star because we are in the northern zone. Find out more by visiting The Energy Star Website!
We have an entire line of windows manufactured here in the Midwest. Our triple glazed windows have a U-Value of .22.
